Abstract

This research report explored the factors contributing to male drug use in Amatolaville, a township in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, where socio-economic inequalities and cultural norms significantly influence drug-related behaviours. This study used the Sociological Imagination as a theoretical framework to examine the relationship between individual experiences, community attitudes, and overarching structural factors that perpetuate drug use among young males The research employed a qualitative approach, utilising semi-structured interviews with young men, their families, community members, and the police to elucidate nuanced narratives that underscore personal problems and socio-economic challenges encountered by the population. The findings indicated that mental health concerns, family instability, and social expectations regarding masculinity significantly contribute to individuals resorting to drug use as a coping strategy. The research highlights the significance of community culture in influencing drug-related behaviours. The study supports community-based initiatives that empower local voices and tackle the underlying causes of drug use, in accordance with Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3). The report contextualised local experiences within a wider socio-economic framework, enhancing our comprehension of substance addiction in township settings and underscoring the need for tailored policies that tackle both individual and structural issues. This research will assist in enhancing mental well-being and cultivate healthier communities through identifying inclusive and contextually relevant strategies for drug usage prevention.
