Principle,

The Wits deposited work is from all academic and research staff, students and professional and administrative staff whose research publications derive from their employment at Wits, from research grants awarded to Wits, co-authorship where one or more authors are employed by Wits, or otherwise from the use of Wits resources and facilities.

Wits is committed to openly sharing and showcasing on the global stage, the research created or produced by its academics and students in accordance with Intellectual Property legislation and Wits Intellectual Property Policy.

The correct version of the article/book chapter/ book/ thesis is uploaded to Institutional Repository, in accordance with publishers’ copyright policies. The Copyright Act No. 98 of 1978 (as amended) applies to all copyrighted works to be placed in the repository. Where permission is required for placing items, the onus are on authors to obtain written permission from rights-owners, which should then accompany all such items being deposited.

Access

In line with the Open Archive access initiative, access to the full text of all items is unrestricted wherever possible, and material deposited in WIReDSpace is freely and publicly accessible via the Web, except where embargoes or special conditions apply. Restricted access may also be password-controlled. Publicly accessible content of the repository may be used for educational, research or non-commercial purposes under a Creative Commons license. (see http://creativecommons.org/licenses/ ).

Items may be reproduced, displayed, performed, and given to a third party as long as this is for personal research, study or education and for non-profit purposes, and provided also that the material does not have a copyright restriction. This may be done as long as the content is not altered in any way and the author, title and bibliographic details are supplied together with the URL of the original metadata page.

Data may be re-used in any medium without the need to seek permission for any not-for- profit as long as the source is identified by acknowledging the OAI (Open Archives Initiative) identifier or link from the WIReDSpace. Use of any material from the repository for commercial purposes, however, must be approved in advance by the University Research Committee. All materials are preserved in their original formats and only migrated, as technologies change, at the discretion of the University and/or the Library.
