Abstract
Representation in media plays a crucial role in reinforcing hegemonic norms. This study examines the portrayal of femininity and masculinity in shounen anime, with a focus on One Piece and Demon Slayer. Utilising thematic and visual analysis, the research examines how character development and visual narratives, including clothing, colour schemes, abilities, and dialogue, perpetuate problematic notions of gender performativity. Drawing on feminist media theory and Critical Diversity Literacies, the analysis elucidates how gender hierarchies are reproduced and maintained. Feminist media theory is employed to explore how portrayals in both series reinforce patriarchy, hegemonic masculinity, the objectification of the female body, and hyper-femininity.
