A comparative analysis of mathematical proficiency in fraction word problems in grade 6 textbooks.

Abstract

Fractions are an important aspect of learning mathematics. Despite learners’ frequent textbook use as learning materials, learners still struggle with fraction word problems. This study compared three Grade 6 mathematics textbooks—Premier, Headstart and Platinum, and analysed their potential to promote mathematical proficiency. To achieve this objective, the presentation of worked-out examples and word problems exercise examples were analysed according to Kilpatrick et al. strands of mathematical proficiency and categorised accordingly. Findings highlighted a significant focus on the promotion of procedural fluency and productive disposition, creating gaps in the promotion of mathematical proficiency as the other strands were under-represented across all three textbooks. Additionally, the limited presentation of fraction worked-out examples suggests a limited exposure to support a range of word problems in the textbook. The study concludes that while the three selected Grade 6 mathematics textbooks are intended to promote the aims of the curriculum, their fraction content presentation on worked-out examples and fraction word problems hinders an all-encompassing development of proficiency because of the overemphasis on routine fraction problems. The study’s findings address a notable practical gap in the three selected Grade 6 textbooks, specifically in their presentation of fraction word problems, The study also makes a methodological contribution by operationalising Kilpatrick et al. five strands of mathematical proficiency for use in analysis of examples (in textbooks).
