Abstract
Organisational culture is becoming increasingly important and organisations are re imagining and re-focusing on the culture which exists within their businesses as well
as the effects these factors have on employee engagement. This report identifies
some key feature of organisational culture which can affect employee engagement by
looking at one organisation specifically.
A qualitative approach was taken within a South African organisation, based in
Johannesburg, to identify the perceptions of factors of organisational culture which
positively influence employee engagement within this organisation. The literature
review highlighted various factors of organisational culture which were believed to
influence employee engagement and through the interview process, many of these
factors were identified and emphasised as being important in creating positive
employee engagement.
The research concluded that within this organisation, reward and recognition was the
leading factor in creating positive employee engagement and was closely followed by
leadership’s role and building relationships.
Since employee engagement has been proven to be related to several positive work
outcomes, it would be a viable option for businesses to increase levels of employee
engagement by improving their organisational culture. Thus, some recommendations
for establishing various factors of organisational culture within this business have been
offered.
