Abstract

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) represents a paradigm shift marked by the rapid evolution of technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and the Internet of Things, with profound implications for the automotive sector. The Fourth Industrial Revolution has the potential to fundamentally change how vehicles are designed, manufactured, and serviced. South Africa’s automotive industry is a critical sector of the country’s economy, employing over 110,000 people and contributing over 7% to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). This study examines the level of preparedness of the South African Automotive Industry for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The research employs semi-structured interviews with 12 industry participants. Findings indicate that while South African companies have begun integrating 4IR technologies, significant hurdles such as skill shortages, low investments in Research and Development (R&D), and implementation challenges persist. However, 4IR presents an opportunity for South Africa to transform its automotive industry and position itself as a global leader in the production of advanced, technology-enabled vehicles. The implementation of 4IR in the South African automotive industry will require significant investment in research and development, education and training of workers, and a comprehensive strategy for the adoption of 4IR technologies.
