Towards improving environmental legislation in artisanal and small-scale mining: a case study of Otter Mine in Tanzania

Abstract

This research focuses on improving environmental legislation in artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in Tanzania. While economically important, ASM operations often result in severe environmental degradation due to inadequate regulatory frameworks and knowledge. This research, based on a case study around Otter Mine, identifies gaps in current legislation and proposes measures to mitigate environmental impacts. The research was conducted through a combination of legislative review, interviews with local operators, as well as environmental and operational assessments. The findings highlight the need for stricter environmental controls and government intervention to standardise mining practices and rehabilitate affected areas, ensuring the long-term viability of both the environment and the mining sector.
