Abstract

Background: Line supervisors in South African underground platinum mines face challenges regarding risks to their health and safety. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the contributing factors to occupational injuries of Team leaders in a South African underground platinum mine. Method: Mine safety statistics were obtained and analysed for common themes. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected from a focus group interview with Team leaders and 33 questionnaires completed by Team leaders to gather socio-demographic, fatigue, work stress, job satisfaction and risk-taking behaviour information. Results: Fall of ground, material handling and slip and fall injuries were the common accident-causing agencies. The majority of injuries sustained by Team leaders were serious injuries. No socio-demographic factors were significantly associated with occupational injuries. Fatigue and work stress were significantly associated with injuries. Fatigue was attributed to extended working hours and travelling long distances. Work stress was attributed to the multi-tasking of Team leaders. Job satisfaction was negatively associated with work stress and risk-taking behaviour. Conclusion: The aim of the study was achieved as fatigue and work stress were found to be contributing factors to occupational injuries. Contributors to fatigue, work stress and job satisfaction ought to be addressed to improve health and safety in the South African platinum mining industry
