The rise and role of feminists and queer-identifying individuals in democratising political and policy environments

Abstract

This study examines the rise and the role of queer-identifying individuals and feminists in democratising the political and policymaking environments in South Africa. The research investigates the lived experiences of queer-identifying individuals and feminists in the political and policymaking environments, looking at the exclusions, challenges, and opportunities of these marginalised groups. The study examines the impact of inclusive and representative policy developments on the creation of safer spaces for marginalised groups. Intersectionality, Social Ecology, and Queer theory have been used as theoretical frameworks to provide critiques on the effect of complexities in intersectional identities and how often the exclusions exist because of policies that undermine these theories. It also provides a critique of the limited representation of queer persons and women in countries such as South Africa, with a legal and progressive stance on the rights of queer-identifying individuals and women. The study conducted interviews with activists, politicians, feminists, and policymakers within various political parties to better understand the lived experiences of these marginalised communities. The study shows the barriers to political participation of queer-identifying individuals and women, such as the structural, institutional barriers and homophobia as they undermine an inclusive and representative policymaking environment. The findings suggest that progress has been made to address the gender and race politics around including women, but little has been done to highlight the exclusion of the “other” when it relates to sexuality. The study expresses the need for comprehensive policy reform to ensure political participation and representation of queer people and women to reflect the diverse and equal society that is expressed in the South African constitution. The study aims to contribute to the understanding of strengthening democracy through the representation and participation of marginalised groups to create a more inclusive political and policymaking environment in South Africa
