In the world of donor funding, there are inevitable instances where funding for certain projects or interventions will be concluded and withdrawn. There is no sustainability of these projects. In the South African context, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) projects and interventions are some of the most heavily funded disease areas in South Africa. With funding cuts or decreases or complete removal of funding, these projects are impacted resulting in millions of livelihoods being affected. This research report looks at the ethical responsibilities that lie with the state to ensure that HIV/AIDS programmes are sustained beyond the funding period. Using different moral theories such as the theory of justice and care ethics, I have been able to show that the state has the ethical obligation to ensure the sustainability of these programmes when funding decreases or is stopped.
