Abstract
Higher education institutions assume a pivotal role in addressing regional and national challenges by fostering human capital development, promoting innovation, and contributing to socio- economic advancement. Clarifying the role of universities within their regions has become essential, as it is widely acknowledged that universities contribute to regional development by employing graduates, collaborating with local industries, and influencing policy-making, thereby impacting the region's innovation systems. When examining the varying perspectives on the overall function of universities, particularly regarding their role within a specific region, it is essential to consider how the newly established Sol Plaatje University interprets its responsibilities and how it fits into the broader discourse on the evolving roles of universities worldwide. The study aimed to investigate the role of Sol Plaatje University (SPU) in contributing to the development of the Northern Cape region. The study sought to answer three key questions: What challenges has SPU identified that impede the development of the Northern Cape? What specific programs and initiatives has Sol Plaatje University implemented to support development in the Northern Cape? Moreover, how has Sol Plaatje University engaged with local communities to enhance development efforts in the Northern Cape? A qualitative methodological approach, utilising documentary analysis of the university's key strategic documents, was employed to gather data and answer the research questions through a thematic analysis. The findings show that SPU, through its core institutional role, has effectively addressed challenges related to the quality of teaching, socio-economic conditions, and service delivery in the region. Highlighting these issues as significant barriers to regional development. The university further emphasises key initiatives and programs it has implemented to promote growth in the area, through its core function. This includes engaging with important stakeholders, fostering strategic research and innovation, enhancing academic skills in vital areas, and contributing to infrastructure development. Additionally, the university has demonstrated its commitment to collaborative efforts that stimulate regional development through economic initiatives aimed at equipping entrepreneurs with the necessary skills to engage in the province’s economy. In conclusion, future research should investigate how SPU's policies and initiatives can be optimised to enhance their developmental impact and investigate the university's impact on regional development through counterfactual impact analysis.
