Dossier TKZ-8993: Hyperlinks, Space, and Apparatus

Abstract

Dossier TKZ 8993: Hyperlinks, Space and Apparatus marks the author’s academic return to Thokoza - a township situated in the South East Rand, Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg - a 45 mins drive from Wits University’s School of Fine Art campus. In 2020; as part of Mokoena’s BAFA Honours in Fine Art, the artist’s creative turn to Thokoza took the form of an online visual archive that aimed to make sense of Thokoza’s chaotically complex time period between 1989 and 1993. With 1993 being the year Mokoena was born, the accompanying dossier-cum-dissertation aims to makes sense of the space/time/place of Thokoza 1989-1993 through core ideas of the hyperlink, and the idea of assemblage. These two approaches function as sonic, philosophical and diagrammatic vehicles that traverse fields of the reference to idea; artistic gesture to the sonic; and the historiographical to the assemblage.
