Investigating the Experiences of School Principals Servant and Ethical Leadership in Gauteng Province

Abstract

The study aimed to investigate the experiences of school principals in Gauteng Province concerning servant and ethical leadership. Specifically, it sought to assess the awareness level of school principals regarding these leadership styles within the Gauteng Province context, explore their experiences with servant and ethical leadership, and understand how these leadership styles influenced their practices. A qualitative research approach within the interpretivism paradigm was employed to achieve these objectives. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with principals, deputy principals, departmental heads, teachers, and learners from three schools in Gauteng province. The case study design allowed for an in-depth examination of servant leadership practices and ethical leadership by school principals. The study’s findings revealed that some servant and ethical leadership practices were prevalent among some principals in Gauteng Province. They emphasised meeting the needs of both their staff and learners through effective communication and leading by example. Additionally, they - displayed integrity and transparency in decision-making and model ethical behaviour in many areas of leadership for their staff and learners. This research underscores the significance of servant and ethical leadership in fostering a positive school culture and enhancing learner well-being.
