Abstract

This study examines how cultural and social factors influence trust and risk perceptions among consumers in South African townships during online shopping. Unlike urban markets, township consumers face unique challenges in verifying the authenticity of online retailers, contributing to heightened perceptions of risk. The study aimed to investigate (a) factors influencing trust and their impact on purchase intentions, (b) perceived risks and their effect on behaviour, and (c) the role of cultural dynamics such as word-of-mouth, community networks, and collective decision-making. A qualitative ethnographic design was used, with data collected through in-depth interviews and informal engagement in township settings. Participants were selected using purposive sampling, and thematic analysis was applied to identify key patterns related to trust, risk, and social influences. Findings show that trust in online shopping is shaped by the perceived credibility of the website and the retailer’s reputation, particularly when there is a physical presence. While financial, delivery, and privacy risks were commonly cited, these did not consistently deter purchase behaviour. Many consumers balanced these concerns with the convenience of online shopping and used informal strategies to manage risks. Cultural and social influences played a central role. Word-of-mouth from known individuals and visible success stories within the community were more trusted than anonymous online reviews. Collective decision-making and social validation emerged as critical in building trust and reducing perceived risk. The study offers valuable insights into township e-commerce, highlighting the importance of culturally rooted trust-building strategies. It contributes to the limited literature on digital consumer behaviour in township contexts and provides guidance for e-commerce stakeholders looking to engage this market effectively.
