Abstract

This study describes the catalysts and constraints influencing the integration of persons with disabilities (PWD) into the Msunduzi municipal area. The study aimed to identify and analyse the systemic, institutional, and societal factors that either enable or hinder the integration of Persons with Disabilities (PWD) in Msunduzi. By examining these factors, the research sought to provide actionable insights and recommendations to policymakers, businesses, and advocacy groups, thereby advocating for a more inclusive and equitable economic environment for PWD in the Msunduzi Municipality. The study used a qualitative approach and gathered data from sixteen participants. The said data was then analysed thematically. The findings suggest that there are few catalysts but a range of constraints that influence their integration. Some of these included a lack of awareness by government officials about policy and implementation, physical barriers such as inaccessible and poor infrastructure, poor communication, and the absence of an affordable, and accessible transport system in addition to social stigma and discrimination. The research makes a number of recommendations for stakeholders to affect the inclusion of PWD in the Msunduzi Municipality particularly in terms of Involving PWD in decision making structures and consulting them about possible municipal decisions that could have an impact on PWDs lives.5
