dc.description.abstractEnergy supply disruptions are posing an ever-greater threat to energy-intensive sectors, especially those like smelting, which depend on an uninterrupted flow of power to keep their operations running. Energy interruptions at the Richards Bay Smelter potentially have serious consequences socially, environmentally, and financially. This is due not only to the importance of the smelter for the local and national economy but also to the large number of people it employs. Three main goals guided this study: first, to figure out how power cuts impact the smelter socially, environmentally, and financially; second, to investigate and assess how effective current mitigatory ways of dealing with energy interruptions and third, to propose mitigation measures to address the social, financial and environmental impacts of energy supply interruptions on Richards Bay smelter. Utilising a mixed-methods approach, the research integrated quantitative data collected from questionnaires with qualitative insights gathered through interviews with 50 senior management professionals at the Richards Bay Smelter. The results enhanced the understanding of the challenges associated with energy disruptions and provided practical recommendations for reducing their negative effects on both the smelter's operations and the surrounding community. The study established that energy supply disruptions have serious effects on several fronts. From a social perspective, they seem to lead to job losses, financial stress, and a decline in worker morale. From an environmental viewpoint, they result in unplanned emissions and inefficiencies because of interruptions in procedures that are supposed to control pollution. From a financial aspect, energy interruptions entail losses in production, higher operational costs, and a decline in the company's competitive edge. While some mitigation strategies, such as backup power systems and stakeholder collaboration, have proven effective, gaps remain in addressing long-term resilience. The study concludes by recommending enhanced investment in renewable energy integration, strengthening infrastructure resilience, and implementing proactive energy management policies. These recommendations aim to minimise future risks and ensure industrial sustainability amid South Africa’s evolving energy landscape.
