| dc.description.abstract | High dropout rates of Information Technology learners in South African township schools pose a significant barrier to preparing the nation's workforce for the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (James et al., 2023). This is particularly concerning within the field of Information Technology (IT), where a skilled workforce is critical for economic development (Papamitsiou et al., 2020). Understanding the factors that contribute to student dropout in IT education is paramount to addressing this challenge and ensuring equitable access to success (Aldowah et al., 2022). This study employs a qualitative approach to investigate the phenomenon of high dropout rates among IT learners in South African townships. Through in-depth interviews with IT teachers, the research delves into the lived experiences of educators on the frontlines of this issue. Thematic analysis will be utilized to identify recurring themes that illuminate the challenges faced by both teachers and students within the township IT education environment. This research focuses on the unique perspective of IT teachers, who occupy a critical position within the Multilevel Framework (Bryk & Schneider, 2002) – bridging the gap between individual students, the school environment, and the broader community. By analyzing the insights and experiences of these educators, the study aims to identify key factors contributing to high dropout rates in township IT education. The subsequent analysis will offer valuable recommendations to inform stakeholders, including policymakers, educators, and community organizations. These recommendations will be designed to develop targeted interventions that address the identified challenges and improve learner outcomes in township IT programs. Ultimately, this research seeks to contribute valuable knowledge and understanding to the ongoing effort of improving access to and success in IT education for all South African learners. | |
