Abstract

This qualitative case study investigates the leadership challenges within the energy transition of a South African Freight Company. Through semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis, the study identifies key barriers such as strategic deficiencies, organizational constraints, resistance to change, and communication gaps. It highlights the importance of transformational and collaborative leadership styles in overcoming these challenges and driving successful energy transitions. The research further explores the significance of adopting structured change management strategies, particularly Kotter’s Eight-Step Model, to address bureaucratic hurdles and stakeholder resistance. The findings suggest that a participatory leadership approach, combined with continuous capacity-building and effective communication, is crucial for sustainable energy transitions. The study offers practical insights for freight companies to navigate the complexities of the energy transition and contribute to achieving South Africa's net-zero targets.
