| dc.description.abstract | The study employed a qualitative approach to assess the outcomes of green bond-funded projects on renewable energy development and the transition to a low-carbon energy system in South Africa. Using Nedbank’s 2019 Renewable Energy Bonds as a case study, the study examined how participants interpret and understand the role of green bonds in supporting renewable energy development. South Africa faces significant climate-related challenges, as evidenced by recent extreme weather events that have had catastrophic impacts on communities across the country. With a national goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and a commitment to decommissioning coal power stations, South Africa is increasingly looking towards renewable energy solutions. Green bonds have emerged as an innovative funding mechanism to support South Africa’s energy transition and address its urgent energy needs. This study used semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders from the green bond and renewable energy sectors, along with community representatives, to evaluate the impact of green bonds within South Africa’s distinct energy and economic landscape. It aimed to capture diverse perspectives on the effectiveness and limitations of green bonds in advancing the country's transition to a low-carbon energy future. The findings confirmed that green bonds have emerged as a pivotal mechanism for driving renewable energy development and fostering private sector participation in South Africa’s transition to a low carbon economy. By establishing frameworks aligned with global Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards, green bonds not only enhance transparency but also encourage broader investment in sustainable projects across the country. However, the study highlights critical challenges, including the exclusion of "dirty industries" such as mining, which, despite their substantial emissions, are integral to the economy and essential for financing renewable initiatives. The findings also emphasize the necessity of incorporating socio-economic outcomes into green bond projects to address persistent inequalities and ensure that historically marginalized communities’ benefit from renewable energy investments. Stakeholder feedback underscores the barriers posed by high issuance costs, compliance requirements, and practices that favor established entities, which limit market diversity and participation. Therefore, for green bonds to fulfill their potential in South Africa, structural reforms, including government incentives and regulatory changes, are identified as crucial to lower barriers to entry and foster a more inclusive and effective green financing landscape. | |
