Abstract

This research focused on the adoption of electric cars in South Africa, specifically in regions like Gauteng. The study used a qualitative approach with a sample size of 20 participants from Wits Business School students. Data were collected using documentary analysis, interviews and focus groups. The study employed thematic procedures to analyze the data and results show a number of key challenges with regards to electric cars and their benefits in reducing air pollution and climate change mitigation. Results show that accessibility to charging infrastructure was problematic in some provinces while the same were easily accessible in other provinces. The study further found that although there were sufficient charging stations available, there was a general lack of awareness and knowledge about electric cars among residents. The study recommends launching education and awareness campaigns, including workshops, seminars, and public information campaigns, to increase overall awareness and knowledge about the benefits and features of electric vehicles.
