Abstract
Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a widely recognized intervention for treating Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), rooted in the understanding that behaviour is shaped by external stimuli. It involves using reinforcement and punishment to either encourage or discourage specific behaviours. ABA has shown promise in various global contexts, but its application in South Africa remains underexplored. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of ABA as a therapeutic approach for students diagnosed with ASD in South Africa. The goal is to assess whether ABA can be adapted to better fit the unique needs of South African learners with ASD. This conceptual study employed a scoping review approach, analysing secondary data. The findings of the study suggest that ABA is a highly effective intervention, capable of targeting a wide range of developmental domains. The results highlight the flexibility of ABA in promoting skill acquisition in a manner that aligns with natural learning processes. However, it also emphasizes the need for ABA to be contextualized to address the specific cultural, educational, and social dynamics in South Africa. The research concludes that while ABA is an effective intervention for students with ASD in South Africa, there is a need for further adaptation and local customization to fully address the unique challenges and opportunities in the South African educational background.
