| dc.description.abstract | This study investigates the readiness of South African energy utility providers to implement artificial intelligence (AI) in ways that uphold ethical standards. While AI offers clear operational advantages—such as improved efficiency and data- driven decision-making—it also raises ethical concerns related to algorithmic bias, decision transparency, and accountability for outcomes. A qualitative research design was adopted to gain in-depth, context-rich insights into the ethical dimensions of AI adoption. Data were collected through structured, open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews conducted with a purposive sample of stakeholders, including utility executives, IT professionals, ethics officers, regulatory representatives, and customers. This approach enabled the study to explore stakeholders' lived experiences, perceptions, and interpretations of ethical AI readiness within their organizations. Thematic analysis was used to identify recurring patterns and key concerns across stakeholder responses. The findings reveal that while ethical AI is acknowledged as a strategic priority, implementation efforts are inconsistent and often lack formal policy direction. Most organizations operate without standardized ethical guidelines or robust governance frameworks, resulting in fragmented practices and limited oversight. Respondents highlighted specific challenges, such as the absence of tools to detect algorithmic bias and inadequate mechanisms for ensuring transparent, accountable decision-making. The study concludes that meaningful ethical AI integration requires sector-wide regulatory alignment, investment in targeted training, and multi-stakeholder collaboration. A unified ethical framework, grounded in local and international best practices, is essential to ensure that AI systems used by utility providers are fair, transparent, and accountable. | |
