Abstract
This study investigates the experiences of immigrant entrepreneurs in Rustenburg, South Africa, highlighting their unique pathways to business establishment and the challenges they face. Through qualitative research, in-depth interviews were conducted with immigrant business owners to gain insights into their motivations, barriers, and the role of social networks in their entrepreneurial journeys. The findings reveal that immigrant entrepreneurs often start businesses due to limited employment opportunities, financial necessity, and the desire for independence. They utilise resources available to them to adapt their businesses to their specific circumstances; however, they encounter significant obstacles, including crime, complex regulations, limited access to finance, and bureaucratic inefficiencies. The research underscores social networks' importance in supporting the enterprises' initial formation and ongoing success. Policy implications indicate the need for regulatory reforms that facilitate immigrant entrepreneurship, such as streamlined business registration and improved financial assistance. Furthermore, the study addresses a critical gap in entrepreneurship literature concerning under-explored regions in South Africa, providing insights into how socio-political factors influence immigrant business experiences. Limitations, such as a small sample size and challenges in participant diversity, highlight opportunities for future research that could incorporate quantitative methodologies to enhance findings and facilitate broader generalisations. Overall, the research emphasises the significant contributions of immigrant entrepreneurs to the South African economy and advocates for systemic support to help navigate the barriers they encounter.
