Abstract

State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) play a significant role in the global economy, contributing to developmental goals and job creation. However, accusations of inefficiencies within South Africa's SOEs have prompted calls for comprehensive evaluation. This study examines the impact of privatization on the financial and operational performance of selected SOEs, with the aim of informing stakeholders about the potential impediments and opportunities surrounding further privatization efforts. Employing panel data regression analysis over a twelve-year period, this research assesses the relationship between independent variables (such as privatization, government decisions, debt-to-equity ratio) and the dependent variable (financial and operational performance metrics including return on equity, return on assets, and operating margin), considering control variables (interest, inflation, and environmental, social, and governance factors). The findings reveal significant associations between privatization and financial and operational performance indicators. Privatized firms demonstrate higher return on equity and return on assets, indicating improved returns on equity and assets. Supportive government policies also contribute positively to financial performance. However, the integration of environmental, social, and governance factors yields mixed effects, suggesting the need for further exploration. This study provides valuable insights for policymakers, regulators, and business leaders, informing decisions regarding privatization strategies and their broader economic and societal implications.
