Abstract

The research explores the impact of technological innovation in South African social entrepreneurial start-ups on community empowerment and socio-economic equity. Social entrepreneurships rely on technology to be able to scale up and expand their reach (Walske et al., 2021). Therefore, this study explores the connection between technological innovations and social entrepreneurship and investigate how start-ups leverage innovations that are available such as mobile apps, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Renewable Energy, Social Media, Internet of Things (IoT) and other digital tools to address pressing socio-economic challenges that the country is experiencing, such as poverty and unemployment which results to inequality within our societies. A qualitative research approach was used; in depth interviews were conducted with founders, professionals and employees of social entrepreneurships. The findings highlight the potential of technological innovation to empower communities, enhance socio-economic inclusion and support sustainable development. However, there are challenges that persist such as literacy gaps and limited resources among beneficiaries, as well as scalability issues for founders due to a lack of funding. The research results confirmed these barriers and emphasized the need for better support mechanisms. Therefore, the study recommends the use of simple technology, user-friendly digital tools, fostering partnerships with government and private sector entities, development of supportive policies to reduce barriers to entry. Finally, social entrepreneurs are encouraged to develop new innovations that address people’s needs and create a positive, life -changing impact rather than replicating existing models. Such models are more likely to attract sponsors, which can aid in improving the organisation’s finances and scalability.
