Abstract
This study examines the potential for improving sustainable economic growth and development in the Republic of South Africa (RSA) by leveraging advancements in the digital era. The paper evaluates the capacity of information communication technologies (ICTs) to promote economic growth and development. It specifically examines the spread of these technologies, as well as the institutional and regulatory frameworks in the sector, and explores how these new ICTs can contribute to sustainable economic growth and development. The primary aim of the study is to offer the government solutions for capitalizing on the prospects for sustainable development by extensively utilizing ICTs. Significant insights are derived from comprehensive literature research and the analysis of strategic papers that speak directly towards the ICT environment. The ICT ecosystem in the country is facing challenges, with much lower average tele density, mobile access, internet, and broadband penetration rates. The country's limited adoption of ICT hinders the ability to utilize digital solutions for promoting sustainable development. To fully harness the benefits of ICTs in promoting sustainable development in RSA, it is recommended that the country's policy and regulatory framework be strengthened to address the existing lack of regulatory capacity and to foster the growth of the sector and innovative practices that contribute to the economy. Moreover, it is crucial to ensure the security of electronic transactions and prevent RSA from becoming a sanctuary for cyber- crime. This importance cannot be overstated. Similarly, the ICT sector necessitates a supportive policy framework, which includes well-organized national strategies that incorporate ICT-driven progress. Enhancing the impact of new ICTs on the economy relies heavily on strengthening the policy and regulatory environment, as this promotes higher levels of ICT investment and dissemination
