Abstract

A lack of knowledge and objective data on the effects of welding process variables in the application and performance of weld-deposited hard facings has led to a number of failures in the past and subsequent mistrust of the technology. In the work reported in this dissertation, a full factorial experiment was performed in an effort to evaluate the effects of arc current, voltage and polarity, as well as travel speed, stand-off distance and preheat, on the characteristics and properties of a commercial hard facing deposit. A total of 64 welds were deposited under a wide range of welding conditions, using a 2,8mm "Cobalarc 100M" flux-cored wire. The
