dc.description.abstract | In this work the genus Gomphognathus is declared synonymous with the genus Diademodon. The small skeleton of "Microgomphodon", described by Seely in 1895, is recognised as possibly that of a newly "born" Diademodon. The structure of the skull is described in detail. Information was obtained from a wealth of fragmentary skull material belonging to many individuals of different ages. A special section is devoted to dentition and in another section new specimens are described, D. laticeps and D. parringtoni being introduced as new species. In dealing with the skeleton certain aspects of interest are analysed. An answer is sought for the peculiar arrangement of the lumbar ribs. The girdles are dealt with separately and attention is given to the dimensions of the pelvic girdle, in particular with a view to the probability of viviparity. Attention is also given to features which could throw light on aspects such a blood temperature, breathing, and the characteristics of the skin. | en_ZA |
