Abstract

This study explores the misrepresentation of transgender women in South Africa’s mainstream media, using intersecting theories of gender, capability/development, and media representation. It further evaluates how this form of media representation influences perceptions, affects social inclusion, and exacerbates socioeconomic inequalities. Employing qualitative methods, the research paper draws on semi-structured interviews with transgender women and LGBTQ+ activists. It also analyses news media articles. The findings reveal that there has been a noticeable increase in transgender representations in the media and efforts made to protect the rights and dignity of marginalized communities, including transgender women. However, transgender women remain socially marginalized due to harmful stereotypes perpetuated by and in the media. These findings further reveal that transgender identities are framed within heteronormative ideologies and sensationalist lenses. Consequently, this leaves transgender women vulnerable to acts of physical violence and systematic oppression. If left unattended, this can further stunt transgender women’s quality of life, freedoms, and development. Furthermore, the capitalist and exclusionary nature of the media often fails to account for the diverse contexts and unique experiences of transgender women, thus marginalizing a community already set on the margins. However, the study also found forms of resistance, such as collective activism and alternative media, which offer empowering representations. Ultimately, this study posits that equitable and authentic media representations are pivotal to the expansion of transgender women’s capabilities, functionings, and inclusion. As such, it calls for an intersectional and nuanced approach to media representations that amplifies transgender voices and disrupts entrenched systems of exclusion and socioeconomic inequalities. This research paper further calls for rights-based and context-sensitive policies and legal frameworks to improve the recognition and protection of transgender and gender- diverse individuals in society.
