Abstract
ABSTRACT
The aim of this study is to develop a long term framework to mitigate strikes by
workers at Anglo American Platinum (AMPLATS). AMPLATS (a leading world
platinum producing company) has been experiencing continuous protracted
strikes at its operations, halting production. The strikes have increasingly
become more violent over the years. The continued work stoppages have led to
a reduction in productivity, increased costs and lower profits for the company.
The effects of the strike activity have not only been felt by AMPLATS but have
had rippling effects into the South African economy as a whole. Mining is one of
the major contributors to the gross domestic product (GDP) and employment in
South Africa therefore instability in the sector has wide reaching social and
economic consequences.
The research employed a qualitative exploratory single case study of the
company. Investigations were done through semi-structured interviews to
determine why workers go on strike using the company’s Rustenburg
operations. In the process of the investigation, the industrial relations system in
which AMPLATS operates was also reviewed. The findings were presented and
discussed with reference to academic literature presented in the paper.
On discussion, the findings indicate that the continuous strike activity at
AMPLATS is being caused by a cocktail of factors emanating from political,
social, institutional and economic systems. External factors coupled with the
failure of some internal aspects of the industrial relations system of the
company is leading to the continued strike action. To counter the instability, a
long term framework was developed and recommended.
The study seeks to benefit the AMPLATS executives, group executives,
strategic planners, analysts, academics and other stakeholders with an interest
in understanding why strikes occur and how to manage them long term.
