Abstract
As a result of increased competition, an increasingly business environment
causing fluctuating hotel occupancies, South African hotels have had to rely more
on outsourcing activities to remain competitive.
The aim of this study was to identify the major differences between regular
outsourcing activities and those done in South African hotels. The research was
conducted amongst senior managers involved in outsourcing in the hotel industry.
The results of the study indicate cost advantages to be the main reason for hotels
embarking on outsourcing activities with location also a contributing motivator.
Several challenges associated with outsourcing present themselves in the
operation causing longer term challenges for hotels.
