In the attempt to improve the livelihoods of the rural poor, proper planning is an important aspect for successful project implementation. It is therefore the purpose of this study to determine the beneficiaries‟ perceptions and expectations of the Chiefdom Development Planning approach towards the sustainable improvement of their livelihoods. This is an approach practiced in the Lower Usuthu Smallholder Irrigation Project facilitated by Swaziland Water and Agricultural Enterprise in the kingdom of Swaziland. The study was qualitative in nature as it sought to unveil the meaning the Chiefdom Development Planning situation has for those involved, in the form of in-depth interview. The beneficiaries recognise that planning for development is important as it brings about a shared vision amongst the community members. They also appreciate that the Chiefdom Development Planning approach is stimulating them to think differently about adopting new methods that will assist them to grow more food, have better health and possess more material goods than they previously enjoyed.
