Abstract
This study critically evaluates the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts and performance of South Africa's top 10 mining companies from 2012 to 2022 to determine the trend by reviewing changes in reported parameters under these topics in public reports. The mining companies examined in this research include Anglo-American Platinum, Kumba Iron Ore, Impala Platinum, Gold Fields, Sibanye-Stillwater, Exxaro Resources, Northam Platinum, African Rainbow Minerals, Royal Bafokeng Platinum and Harmony Gold. Through analysis (desktop study) of their ESG reports as well as an online survey with mining-sector stakeholders, this report assesses these companies’ adherence to global standard reporting and their alignment with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and whether there have been changes in reporting over the years in line with global developments relating to sustainability. In terms of reporting standards, this study found that all of South Africa's top 10 mining companies, excluding Sibanye-Stillwater, complied with GRI reporting standards from 2012 to 2022. Findings also reveal since 2018 most of these companies have started prioritising SDGs in areas like diversity, clean energy, economic growth, climate action, and life on land. However, variations in reporting formats and data reporting challenge stakeholders’ ability to track ESG progress over time. The online survey analysis identified ongoing challenges, including regulatory inconsistencies, limited funding, and insufficient stakeholder engagement. Although most of these mining companies have significantly reduced carbon emissions and water and energy usage, progress remains hindered by financial and regulatory constraints. To enhance ESG integration, this study recommends greater stakeholder collaboration, cross-functional teams within companies, and strategic partnerships with external organizations.
