Abstract
The widening gender gap, and under-representation of women in leadership roles across organisations worldwide, specifically within the South African context, highlights some of the challenges experienced by women in leadership roles. Despite significant strides to advance women in leadership roles, research findings indicate that leadership roles continue to be dominated by men.
The study was aimed at gaining an understanding of the factors that influence the role of women in leadership within Transnet, a South African state-owned company (SOC). A qualitative research methodology, using the case study method, was applied to focus on fifteen women in senior executive roles within the organisation.
Key results of the study suggest that women in leadership roles, despite being capable, dedicated and passionate, find managing and pursuing leadership roles challenging. Results of the study identified several factors that influence the role of women in leadership within Transnet.
The results of the study illustrate the social and economic benefits that may be achieved through gender parity, and the promotion of gender diversity. Organisations, including Transnet, committed to advancing women in leadership roles, and developing robust measures to achieve sustainable transformational goals, may provide the impetus for much needed change.
