Abstract

The global ICT revolution has led to the introduction of numerous education related ICT projects worldwide. The ICT introduction in education has resulted in an abrupt transformation and changes. These changes pose various challenges and risks. Some of these projects have succeeded, and some have failed. In 2002, the GDE introduced the GOL project to benefit learners, educators, and the community at large. The purpose of this exploratory study was to identify and investigate factors that have lead to the successful use or failure of using GOL in primary schools. Some of the findings were that inadequate costs, lack of access, lack of training, lack of technical support, theft, and vandalism were the main barriers faced by schools. It was also established that perception and attitude, socio-economic factors, and infrastructure were other crucial barriers. Lastly, it emerged that GOL was used for various activities, depending on the user’s level of competence and knowledge.
