The research investigated the challenges that impede the successful implementation and management of performance at Transnet
Research Purpose
The purpose of the research was to familiarise the researcher with a deeper understanding of the performance management challenges at Transnet. What is it that Transnet can do improve the performance of employees?
The motivation for the study
To determine the effectiveness of performance management and fairness of performance appraisal and what are those factors affecting the successful implementation and management of performance at Transnet?
Research design, approach, and method
The study followed the qualitative research approach using open-ended interview questions to collect data. The finding was analysed using thematic analyst. Fifteen employees of Transnet were interviewed. Purposive sampling was used to select participants.
Main findings
The results of the finding showed that performance management at Transnet does not contribute to the improvement of the performance and productivity of the employees and it is being done as a tick-box exercise.
Practical/managerial implications
When used effectively, the performance management system may improve employees’ performance and productivity and ultimately, the performance of the organisation.
Contribution/value add
The research may assist Transnet and other Parastatals or SOCs in terms of implementing and managing effective performance management systems.
