Abstract

According to the National Health Promotion Policy (2003) the integration of health promotion with other health programmes in the Department of Health is a strategic goal. This research reviewed the progress made with this aim of integration of health promotion with health programmes. Programme managers for health promotion and health programmes were interviewed to elicit their views on the progress made in the integration and, at the same time assess the standard of practice of health promotion. The research was conducted within a qualitative research framework. The research findings show that the integration was an important aim and that it is happening in the Department of Health. The healthy lifestyles campaign has given impetus to the integration. Roles and responsibilities were alluded to. Planning and formal coordination seem to be lacking as well as advancing health promotion principles and strategies, like equity and empowerment focussed. These can be used more vigorously to further health promotion aims, also in other health programmes
