The South African manufacturing sector has seen challenging times in recent years, and this will most certainly continue in the foreseeable future. This research aims to identify and improve the implementation of emerging technologies; these being the internet of things and big data. The research identifies any challenges or obstacles experienced by the stakeholders in an organisation. It is centred on the effect on industrial conditions when viewed through the lenses of ethics, governance and sustainability applicable when new technology is introduced to operations. Qualitative data collection took place in the form of semi-structured interviews which were conducted with a broad set of questions defined in an interview schedule. The key findings of this research were a set of important principles that are important to consider during the planning and implementation of technology within an organisation. These dominant principles were identified through thematic analysis of the qualitative data gathered during the interviews. The important principles for the planning and implementation of technology were identified as the well-being of both stakeholders and the organisation, trust between stakeholders, individual and organisational performance, inclusion in planning an implementation, sufficient planning taking place, and an “invisible partnership” being present between all stakeholders.en_ZA
