Abstract
ABSTRACT
Implementation of Online Assessments in Tertiary Institutions in South Africa
Orientation: The South African tertiary landscape has been fraught with problems over the past few years, for example, student demonstrations regarding the increase in tuition fees resulted in the disruption of academic activities. A proposed alternative method could be an online assessment as it could be a useful tool for measurability and accountability, as well be an ongoing process for learning and research.
Research purpose: The research aims to investigate, through qualitative analysis, the security and implementation of online assessments within tertiary institutions in South Africa.
The motivation for the study: Alternative solutions to traditional assessments should be investigated within the South African context not only to avoid the high cost of disruptions to the academic calendar but also to embrace technology.
Research Design, Approach, and Method: The survey method was used and a questionnaire was sent to the identified South African Universities where online assessments are currently taking place. This was supported by qualitative data obtained through semi-structured interviews with relevant stakeholders.
Main Findings: Most of the tertiary institutions are using online assessments. There are challenges especially with the cheating of students in the form of dishonest behaviours. The security of the online assessment systems appears to be not such a big factor, but proper authentication is deemed advisable. The effectiveness of the online assessments seems to be very good with training being provided in the use of the online assessments.
Practical and managerial implications: The research could be used to determine the tertiary institutions within South Africa that have implemented online assessments and the challenges encountered. Awareness of these challenges that the tertiary institutions
experienced could be valuable, as well as the security measures that have been implemented to curb cheating and fraud.
Contribution/Value-add: South African tertiary institutions are embracing technology in the form of online assessments and there are various types of online assessments available that could be utilised within institutions.
