Caligari then and now: an analysis of narrative adaptation from modernist to postmodernist.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper analyzes the ways in which a particular narrative, namely Robert Wiene’s Das Cabinet des Dr Caligari (1920), has been adapted from a modern to a postmodern context in David Lee Fisher’s The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (2005). The analysis considers the context, narrative and mise en scène of each film, and what both the similarities and differences between the two mean on a theoretical level. This paper also considers the role of technology in portraying narrative, and how technology has enhanced postmodernist fiction.
