CLASS ABSENTEEISM AND PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS AT THE SOUTH WEST GAUTENG FET COLLEGE.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of the study is to explain why the NC(V) Level 2 students at George Tabor campus, one of the six campuses of the South West Gauteng College (SWGC) in the Gauteng Province, are absent from classes. The study investigated if class absenteeism is correlated with socioeconomic conditions, natural phenomenon and institutional factors. The study adopted a quantitative research method and used survey method to gather data. The findings of the research revealed that student absenteeism is widespread in the college under study due to reasons such as transport problems, personal illnesses, bad weather conditions, family commitments, social, recreational and leisure activities and a lack of interest in the subject. The study also found a significant positive relation between attendance and performance with Safety in Society and Tourism but not with Information Technology and Computer Science.
