As a car-captive society, the City of Johannesburg is faced with mobility challenges which contribute to high traffic congestion and air pollution. Hence, the City is investing significant resources in Eco-Mobility infrastructure with the aim of reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality. This includes the construction of cycling and walking lanes, the expansion of the Rea Vaya BRT system to other areas of the City, expansion of the City’s roads, and the construction of pedestrian bridges. One of the main findings of the research was that the Rea Vaya BRT system is successful in attracting users and continuously increasing its ridership numbers, year on year. Most importantly, research findings also indicate that for any City to effectively implement Eco-Mobility approaches, it needs the full support of its political leadership. This should also include regular, and continued awareness campaigns about Eco-Mobility, showing residents the socio-economic benefits of the infrastructure, good legislation, improved signage on the roads, safety campaigns and demarcation of already organised roads. This will assist in generating co-ownership of the infrastructure built between the City and its residents.en_ZA
