Abstract

The adverse effects of the current turbulent social and political situation in South Africa upon the mental health of socio-politically disadvantaged youth has emerged as a central area of concern amongst mental health professionals. The ability of the vast number of disadvantaged youths to cope with the stresses that confront them on a daily basis, has profound consequences for the South Africa of the future. the present study was prompted by the lack of any comprehensive and accessible intervention programme for children under stress in this country, as well as by the dearth of applied stress research into so-called "normal" Apartheid-related conditions.
