Abstract
Large proportions of the South African population remain poor and food insecure. The use of rainwater harvesting (RWH) is becoming increasingly important due to scarcity of water and the costs associated with bringing water for food to poor communities in rural areas. Transferring technology to communities is also exceptionally difficult. The research examined the present policy, research and technology environment and specifically identified indicators that addressed aspects of input, output, outcome and impact required for the use of RWH to successfully improve household food security. The research considered information found in the literature, obtained opinions of experts and government officials elicited through key informant qualitative interviews; and studied a case where RWH is successfully being used to improve household food security. Indicators identified referred to the comprehensive input required such as increased political will, consolidated and co-ordinated governmental effort and enthusiasm; outputs required such as a co-ordinated consolidated policy framework; outcomes such as successful use of RWH for household food practices while impact indicators described longer term effects on peoples’ lives such as improved nutritional status, health and quality of life
