Abstract

This study examines the role of the South African education system in perpetuating gendered employment patterns through path dependence. Using a historical-institutional approach, it investigates how apartheid-era educational policies shaped gender disparities in the labour market. By analysing education and employment data, the research explores whether structural inequalities in schooling have led to persistent occupational segregation. The findings contribute to understanding the long-term effects of historical policies on gendered employment and inform strategies for addressing inequality in education and labour markets. This study highlights the need for policy interventions to break the cycle of gender-based occupational stratification.
