| dc.description.abstract | Drinking and driving continues to be a significant public health and safety issue, particularly among young adults. While studies have explored various aspects of students’ experiences with drinking and driving, factors related to identity, social influences, and the environment have not been extensively studied in South Africa. Moreover, few studies examine the experiences of South African university students specifically related to drinking and driving. Therefore, this study aimed to gain insight into the experiences of drunk drivers and passengers. To determine this, a qualitative research approach was employed, and data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed thematically to understand the interplay of intrapersonal, interpersonal, social, and environmental factors shaping students’ decisions. Findings reveal that moral dilemmas influence decisions to engage in drinking and driving, that both passengers and drivers play a role, and that family and sociocultural contexts shape attitudes related to drinking and driving. These insights highlight the need for targeted interventions addressing students' perceptions of alcohol and risk-taking behaviour. Future research should explore long-term drinking and driving patterns among university students and consider policy measures that incorporate cultural and social influences to promote safer behaviours. | |
