Re-membering Fietas

Abstract

This research report, Re-Membering Fietas, comprises two parts: a creative component and a theoretical introduction on Fietas, a suburb located to the very north west of the inner city of Johannesburg. The creative component consists of a collection of poetry, prose, biography, profile and perspectival writing. In the theoretical introduction, which follows the creative component, I have focused primarily on three aspects: My choice of topic; my choice of form; and the writing process. The theoretical introduction also attempts to unpack thematic concerns raised in the creative work, namely: • The trope of telling ‘untold’ stories in post-apartheid South Africa; • The relationship between place and identity; and • Memory and memorialisation.
