    Primary caregivers’ perceptions of the effect of COVID-19 on the mental well-being of learners at a secondary school in Soweto

    During the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 lockdown restrictions were introduced in South Africa and around world. This led to school closures as well. During this period learners around the world experienced mental-health challenges due to the restrictions on gatherings, school attendance as well as social distancing. Some of the mental-health challenges that affected the learners include depression, anxiety, sleeping disorders as well as weight gain. This study explored the perceptions of the primary caregivers of secondary school learners in Soweto on the mental well-being of learners during the COVID-19 lockdown. The study was conducted using an ecological theoretical framework which looked at the relationship of the learner in relation to different systems that they interact with. The researcher used a qualitative research approach and a phenomenographic research design. Purposive sampling was utilised to select the sample of 8 primary caregivers of grade 11 learners at a Secondary School in Soweto. Semi-structured interviews were the method of data collection and a semi-structured interview schedule was used as the research instrument. Data collected was coded, themed, and analysed using reflective thematic analysis. The results from this study showed how COVID-19 had a negative effect on the academic performance of learners. The learners still could not achieve pre-COVID-19 results even after efforts were made for after-school programs and catch-up sessions. The learners' attitudes towards the virus included fear of death or losing loved ones due to COVID-19 as well as confusion and fear of contracting the virus. The learners shared that coughing, sneezing, or the mere sight of a tissue triggers them to date as they associate such symptoms with COVID-19. The learners in this study experienced psycho-social effects such as anxiety and stress as well as physical challenges such as weight gain, migraines, sleeping challenges as well as communication issues with the family members. Social media and technology acted as a buffer for learners as it offered them information, knowledge as well as social connections with teachers, peers, friends, and extended family members. The importance of working in a multi-disciplinary team to support and foster resiliency for the learners is highlighted. The learners in Soweto had their own experiences, but they were similar to those from around the world and therefore one can conclude that pandemic experiences were generic to some extent.

    A survey of the perceptions and knowledge of anaesthesia and anaesthetists possessed by Grade 12 learners in four Johannesburg districts

    Background William J.G Morton (1816-1868) introduced the world to modern anaesthesia when he successfully anaesthetised a patient using Ether at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in October 1846. (1) Since then, advances in pharmacology have resulted in the safer use of anaesthetic drugs and technological advances have improved monitoring of patients under anaesthesia. Anaesthetists around the world are now involved in the fields of critical care, trauma and pain management. (2)This has brought a sense professional esprit de corps to the anaesthetic fraternity. Despite this radical growth and development of the speciality, there is still a lack of public knowledge regarding the discipline of anaesthesia, anaesthetists’ expertise, or the role played by the anaesthetist in the chain of health care delivery. (3) Methods A cross sectional study was carried out between June and September 2021 on Grade 12 learners in four Johannesburg districts. A questionnaire consisting of three sections and 26 questions was handed out at pre-selected schools. The first part of the questionnaire acquired demographic data, the second contained questions pertaining to anaesthetists and anaesthesia as a speciality, and the third part pertained to interest in the field of anaesthesia. Results Of the 595 learners that participated in this study, 335 (56.3%) were aware that an anaesthetist administers anaesthesia in the operating room. A considerable number of learners n=344 (57,8%) believed that a nurse monitored and recorded the patient’s vital signs during surgery. Only 95 learners (16%) correctly identified all the duties of the anaesthetist outside of the theatre environment. Overall, learners fared poorly, achieving an average score of 14% for the questionnaire. However, there was a statistically significant correlation between being from a high socioeconomic background and awareness that the anaesthetist administers anaesthesia. A high socioeconomic background was defined as having a suburban residence, a household income comprising a salary instead of social grants and care givers that possessed a university degree. Knowledge regarding the intraoperative duties of the anaesthetist was still poor, regardless of the socioeconomic background of the learner. Previous exposure to anaesthesia did not improve awareness about anaesthesia among the learners. Conclusion This study has shown that awareness regarding anaesthesia and anaesthetists is still lacking despite the radical growth in the field. This lack of awareness cannot be ignored; education of the general public should be intensified in order to empower people to ask the right questions as well as make informed decisions about their perioperative care in the future. More than half of the learners in the study (58.5%) believed that good medical education can reduce the burden of health care costs and medicolegal consequences; and 70% of them would request an anaesthetist to provide them with detailed information about their anaesthetic before the start of surgery. Therefore, despite lack of awareness, the majority of the learners displayed interest and willingness to know more about anaesthesia, and grade 12 learners would be a formidable target group to direct anaesthetic education campaigns

    Evaluating the impact of Fourth Industrial Revolution on Education in the rural areas in South Africa

    The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the impact of Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) on education in rural areas in South Africa. This research investigates the following objectives, which are: the impact of 4IR technologies on education and how these technologies can improve the education system in primary and secondary schools in South Africa; the quality of education system in South Africa and factors contributing to the poor education system; how to bridge the gap between the marginalised communities, rural public schools, and urban private schools. The study is focused on public schools in the rural areas in South Africa. Qualitative research strategy has been applied in this research study, interviews have been conducted to afford the researcher an opportunity to interact with stakeholders from the education sector and telecommunication industry. The sample and targeted population of the interviewees are educators from rural schools, former students from rural schools who are in the ICT sector, educators from higher education and 4IR committee member(s). The research strategy applied has been relevant and provided the researcher with a unique in-depth involvement and understanding of the issues contributing to poor education in South Africa. The literature conducted in this study research exhibit that the interview schedule was the most suitable instrument to use to collect data for this research study. One of the findings in this research study is that the powers of administering schools are invested in School Governing Bodies (SGBs) and School Management Teams (STMs). Many parents in rural schools who form part of these bodies are not well-educated and can hardly make an informed decision to benefit learners. Therefore, the adoption of 4IR will centralise the education system and provide equal benefits to learners across the country. The adoption of 4IR on education will have a positive impact and enhance learners’ development in rural areas through robotics concepts. The findings of this research study show that the Department of Basic Education and the South African government are not ready for Fourth Industrial Revolution. However, iv there are signs for opportunities. The findings show the obstacles that can delay the adoption of 4IR to facilitate teaching and learning in rural public schools to bridge the gap that exist between rural public schools and private schools in the cities. The findings show that 4IR can transform the South African education system to compete with the world by producing scholars that are innovative and creative. The findings indicate how communities can transform through digital infrastructure developments to accommodate 4IR in learning in rural schools.     Exploring the mental health and well-being experiences of high school learners during covid-19 in Sebokeng, Vanderbijlpark

    The coronavirus that causes COVID-19 is an acute infection that affects people. The World Health Organization declared it a pandemic on March 11, 2020, and an international public health emergency on January 30, 2020. Residents of Sebokeng in South Africa suffered throughout the lockdown stages brought by COVID-19, finding it difficult to maintain a regular way of life in the face of the unique circumstances due to a shortage of money and business closures. The pandemic caused unimaginable disruptions in many aspects of society, including interruptions for learners in the classroom. It presented high school learners with challenges that increased their likelihood of developing mental health issues. Thus, the study aimed to explore high school learners' experiences of mental health and well-being during COVID-19 in Sebokeng, Vanderbijlpark. Against this background, the objective of the study was to gain an in-depth understanding of the lived experiences of high school learners in Sebokeng, Vanderbijlpark during COVID-19 and, explore the perceived influence of the pandemic on learners' mental health and well-being. The study used semi-structured one-on-one interviews to gather data. The framework for analysing and comprehending the results of my research was provided by the social context perspective, a subset of the ecological systems theory method. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The key themes and subthemes that emerged from the data are presented in this study, along with the research findings. The impact of COVID-19 on the learner's mental health will be investigated initially. The impact of COVID-19 on participants' academic progress, financial losses as a result of COVID-19, and overall COVID-19 experiences are then explored. Therefore, there has never been a more ideal time to investigate how learners' COVID-19 experiences may have affected their mental health. This study provides some insight into the use of support treatments for mental health issues.
