Item Making a mark: Wits School of Construction Economics and Management and Its Contribution to the Construction and Property Fields(University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2024) Laryea, Samuel; Smit-Stachowski, Alexandra; Mphuti, BongiThis book is a historical account on the Wits School of Construction Economics and Management, its contributions and impact in society, which is very significant and leaves a positive impression of academic and industry development, despite historical hurdles. It looks at the past, present, and future of the School in the broader context of South African history and the overall development of the university. The process of writing this book has been both challenging and exciting with interesting discoveries about the academic disciplines and the growth trajectory of the School. It was challenging uncovering information from various sources within the university and external sources. It has also been an interesting process learning about the rich history and contributions of a key School within the university to the South African and global society. This book chronicles the careers of some graduates of the School who served in the highest leadership and management roles, and made an indelible mark in the construction industry locally and internationally. The School’s graduates have made substantial contributions to the growth and advancement of the South African construction and property sectors and their respective statutory councils including the South African Council for Quantity Surveying Profession (SACQSP), South African Council for Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP) and the South African Council for the Property Valuers Profession (SACPVP). The School’s graduates have also played leading roles in major construction firms that have built some of the iconic buildings in South Africa and other parts of the world. In recent years, many of the School’s graduates are increasingly being recruited by firms in Europe, Middle East, Australia, and the US, indicating the quality of their education and their value to employers and the global construction industry. Through a meticulous search through the Wits university archives and available published material, a huge amount of history and contributions of the School could be produced in this book. As these sources spoke their minds, many of their quotes are produced verbatim - so we can appreciate their wisdom. When gaps emerged in the historical chronology, we turned to those who studied and taught at Wits in the various phases of our Faculty. The Alumni and past Academics took time from their busy schedules as many are still instrumental in building our country, to answer several questions and share their fondest memories and what they believe is the state of the industry currently. The original 15-page document has grown and developed, as has the School, into a fully-fledged manuscript of interviews, yet-unheard-of stories and a vibrant and vital document, to be read and shared widely. The story arc includes the factual history of the School of Construction and Economic Management from birth until now, and is peppered with amusing anecdotes and pictures. Students’ awards were mentioned, where the information was available. This also serves to remember the inspiring academics including Professors Harry Bell-John, Geoff Pearse, Doug Calderwood, Ronnie Schloss and the lecturers who led our current leaders in the fields of quantity surveying, construction management, building sciences and property development, onto the path they have carved, so they can make a mark. This story is filled with chutzpah, grit, determination, humour and a few mishaps, but proves without a doubt that the time spent by students at Wits and SCEM has resulted in lasting friendships, business savvy and in professionals in the built environment who are making their mark across the country, the continent and the world. This is their story and the story of the School of Construction and Economic Management.Item New modern and Pleistocene fossil micromammal assemblages from Swartkrans, South Africa: Paleobiodiversity, taphonomic, and environmental context(Elsevier, 2024-03) Steininger, Christine; Clarke, Ronald J.; Caruana, Matthew V.; Kuman, Kathleen; Pickering, Travis Rayne; Linchamps, Pierre; Stoetzel, Emmanuelle; Amberny, LaurieThe oldest deposit at the hominin-bearing cave of Swartkrans, South Africa, is the Lower Bank of Member 1, dated to ca. 2.2 million years ago. Excavations of this unit have produced a diverse and extensive mammalian fossil record, including Paranthropus robustus and early Homo fossils, along with numerous Oldowan stone tools. The present study focuses on the taxonomic analysis of the micromammalian fossil assemblage obtained from recent excavations of the Lower Bank, conducted between 2005 and 2010, as part of the Swartkrans Paleoanthropological Research Project. The taxonomic composition of this assemblage is dominated by Mystromys, a rodent indicative of grassland environments. Taphonomic analysis indicates an accumulation of prey by Tyto alba (Barn owl) or a related species. Environments inferred from this evidence reflect an open landscape primarily covered by grassland vegetation, but they also feature components of wooded areas, rocky outcrops, and the proximity of a river. The Swartkrans fossil assemblage is compared with Cooper's D (dated to ca. 1.4 Ma) and a modern coprocoenosis of Bubo africanus (spotted eagle-owl) collected within the Swartkrans cave for taxonomic, taphonomic, and paleoecological perspectives. Contrasting fossil and modern micromammalian data provide a better understanding of accumulation processes and facilitate a diachronic reconstruction of changes in climate and landscape evolution. Issues regarding paleoenvironmental reconstruction methodologies based on micromammals are also discussed.Item Feeding children with autism in South Africa: the teachers’ perspectives(AOSIS Publishing, 2024-02) Adams, Skye N.; Matsimela, NthabisengBackground: Over 80% of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (autism) exhibit disruptive behaviours during mealtimes, highlighting the need for personalised care. In South Africa, teachers often take on the responsibility of feeding due to resource constraints and the time children spend at school. Moreover, children with autism have unique and individualised feeding requirements, which many teachers may not have the necessary training or skills to address adequately. Objectives: To explore the ways in which teachers of autistic children manage feeding difficulties in the classroom. Method: A qualitative research design was employed using semi-structured interviews. Eight teachers were interviewed on feeding autistic children between the ages of 3 years - 9 years in Johannesburg, South Africa. Data were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. Results: The findings revealed that teachers encountered distinct challenges when it came to feeding autistic children in the classroom, particularly concerning the management of associated feeding difficulties. Teachers employed several strategies to encourage eating in the classroom setting including: (1) bolus modification, (2) behaviour modelling, (3) positive reinforcement and (4) offering choices and alternatives. Conclusion: The study concludes the need for specialised support and training for teachers to address the individualised feeding needs of children with autism. Implementing targeted interventions and providing resources for teachers could enhance their abilities to effectively support children with autism during mealtimes and promote a more inclusive classroom environment. Contribution: This study highlighted the importance of including the teacher in the multidisciplinary team when managing the feeding challenges in children with autism.Item Exploring quality of life post sudden onset hearing loss: a convergent parallel approach(AOSIS Publishing, 2024-02) Ntlhakana, Liepollo; Hamid, SabeehahBackground: Sudden onset hearing loss (SOHL) is rare and presents differently to individuals; hence, it is complex to diagnose. The impact on the quality of life (QoL) varies for individuals and their support structure. However, the exploration of research designs is warranted. Objectives: This study explored the lived experiences of adults post-SOHL diagnosis and the impact on the QoL. Facilitators of emotional and social aspects of counselling provided by audiologists post-SOHL diagnosis were established. Method: This was a convergent parallel research study. Data were collected from the two primary participants and three secondary participants, face-to-face and telephonically. The Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults (HHIA) screening tool and the semi-structured interviews were used for data collection. The data sets were analysed independently, viz. descriptive analysis and thematic analysis, to confirm the impact on the QoL post-SOHL diagnosis. Results: The HHIA scores obtained were 84% and 50% for P1 and P2, respectively. Key themes that emerged from the interviews revealed that communication difficulties mostly impacted the QoL, which in turn influenced their mental and social well-being. Aural rehabilitation was perceived as ineffective support, thus the inability to reduce the impact on the QoL post-SOHL diagnosis. Conclusion: The integrated findings indicated the impact on the QoL post-SOHL diagnosis. Convergent parallel methods should be considered by researchers to understand rare auditory pathologies and their impact on the QoL. Contribution: Person-centred care (PCC) and family-centred care (FCC) are facilitators of counselling that audiologists can employ as QoL management strategies post-SOHL diagnosis.Item The assessment and aetiology of drug-induced ischaemic priapism(Springer Nature, 2024-12) Moodley, Divyen; Badenhorst, Anja; Choonara, Yahya; Adam, AhmedIschaemic priapism is a urological emergency characterised by a prolonged, painful erection unrelated to sexual stimulation. While several aetiological factors contribute to this condition, the pharmacological causes have gained significant attention in recent years. This narrative review aims to comprehensively assess ischaemic priapism, specifically focusing on its pharmacological aetiology. We propose an approach and assessment strategy to the numerous factors associated with pharmacologically induced ischaemic priapism. By enhancing our understanding of the harmacological causes of this condition, healthcare professionals can improve patient management and reduce the long-term complications associated with ischaemic priapism.Item E-learning assessment framework for the public service sector(Public Service Sector Education and Training Authority (PSETA), 2021) Centre for Researching Education & Labour (REAL); University of the Witwatersrand, JohannesburgThe purpose of this research project was to develop an understanding of the change drivers and difficulties linked to implementing e-learning in the South African Public Service Sector in line with policy imperatives and global trends. The project aimed to investigate specific challenges and contextual variables that need to be addressed to strengthen skills development within the public sector. It also aimed to explore how to enhance ways in which the public sector utilises e-learning to upskill and re-skill its workforce. The research was undertaken over a 12-month period, from September 2020 to September 2021, and involved five main phases. Phase One comprised the inception and orientation of the project. The second phase involved a literature review on e-learning including an analysis of relevant public sector documents, reports, and policies on e-learning practices within the public and private sector. This contextual profile describes e-learning practices in the sector and enabled us to structure the public e-learning system as an activity system. The third phase consisted of the development of mediating tools including a comprehensive evaluation tool to offer a potential way forward to enhance strategic planning implementation for e-learning. This will assist with addressing the challenges faced by the public sector in terms of training and the processes of change involved in transitioning the conceptualisation of e-learning to contextualised capacity building. The e-learning criteria framework provides basic guidelines for designing an optimum e-learning experience in the public sector. The elearning review tool (Appendix A) supports and complements the criteria as a tool for analysis of the e-learning programme. The e-learning criteria and tool were sent to ten e-learning experts in the same field of research for comments on further development and improvement. Phase Four consisted of data analysis. Insights from stakeholder engagement and framework development processes were assessed and key emergent themes to inform the e-learning needs of the public sector were identified. In the final phase the findings were reviewed and recommendations proposed and the final report presented here is based on reviewer feedback.Item The Miocene primate Pliobates is a pliopithecoid(Nature Research, 2024-04) Amélie Beaudet; Zanolli, Clément; Urciuoli, Alessandro; Almécija, Sergio; Fortuny, Josep; Robles, Josep M.; Bouchet, Florian; Moyà-Solà, Salvador; Alba, David M.The systematic status of the small-bodied catarrhine primate Pliobates cataloniae, from the Miocene (11.6 Ma) of Spain, is controversial because it displays a mosaic of primitive and derived features compared with extant hominoids (apes and humans). Cladistic analyses have recovered Pliobates as either a stem hominoid or as a pliopithecoid stem catarrhine (i.e., preceding the cercopithecoid–hominoid divergence). Here, we describe additional dental remains of P. cataloniae from another locality that display unambiguous synapomorphies of crouzeliid pliopithecoids. Our cladistic analyses support a close phylogenetic link with poorly-known small crouzeliids from Europe based on (cranio)dental characters but recover pliopithecoids as stem hominoids when postcranial characters are included. We conclude that Pliobates is a derived stem catarrhine that shows postcranial convergences with modern apes in the elbow and wrist joints—thus clarifying pliopithecoid evolution and illustrating the plausibility of independent acquisition of postcranial similarities between hylobatids and hominids.Item Confocal microscopy and molecular analyses reveal anal secretory apparatus in immatures and recover transcontinental Clade of Gall Mites (Eriophyoidea) from Tamarisks(MDPI, 2024-04) Sivu, Situngu; Chetverikov , Philipp E.; Ngubane-Ndhlovu, Nompumelelo P.; Elhalawan, Ashraf; Amrine, JamesTamarisk is an invasive evergreen shrub native to arid regions of Africa and Eurasia and is considered a weed in some countries with dry climates. The complex of gall mites from tamarisks includes fourteen species from four genera of the family Eriophyidae. We reinvestigated the type species of the genus Dicruvasates, D. tamaricis from Egypt, described D. ngubani n. sp. from Tamarix usneoides from South Africa, and revised the generic concept of Dicruvasates. This genus possesses cuticular plates marking longitudinal opisthosomal ridges typical of various phyllocoptine genera, e.g., Echinacrus. We sequenced three genes of Dicruvasates and Phyllocoptes mites from Tamarix and Echinacrus from Frangula, combined our sequences with the data from GenBank, and performed single-gene phylogenetic analyses. All analyses inferred the following: (1) a transcontinental clade Tam comprising Dicruvasates + Aceria + Phyllocoptes from Tamarix; (2) Echinacrus distantly related to Dicruvasates, suggesting the homoplastic nature of the cuticular plates on the opisthosomal ridges, and (3) polyphyly of the genera Aceria and Phyllocoptes. We also investigated partially cleared specimens of Dicruvasates under CLSM and, for the first time, visualized a well-developed anal secretory apparatus (ASA) in the immatures of gall mites, which was previously shown to be a specialized system evolved in Eriophyoidea for silk production. We hypothesize that the ASA contributes to finding nymphs by conspecific males and advocate for the importance of the future molecular biology studies of gall mite silk for developing new methods for controlling mites based on the knowledge of their ecology, behavior, and silk gene genetics.Item Business development services training and entrepreneurial self-efficacy – a focus on necessity- and opportunity-driven entrepreneurs(AOSIS Publishing, 2024) Msimango-Galawe, Jabulile; Eister, TshegofatsoBackground: Entrepreneurs have been galvanised by the worsened economic circumstances in South Africa, and small businesses struggle to become established. By providing skills training, business development services (BDS) improve the performance of firms, through the development of entrepreneurial self-efficacy. Aim: The objective of this study was to determine the impact of BDS training on the entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) of necessity- and opportunity-driven entrepreneurs and whether that impact would be more positive in opportunity-driven rather than necessity-driven entrepreneurs. Setting: The study focused on 519 entrepreneurs in South Africa, of which 97 were necessitydriven and 422 were opportunity-driven. Methods: Statistical analyses were conducted using correlation analysis and multiple linear regression to test the impact of training on the ESE of necessity- and opportunity-driven entrepreneurs while controlling for the impact of confounding variables: gender, education, management experience, industry experience and partnerships. Results: The empirical evidence from this study showed that general entrepreneurial training is more effective in increasing the entrepreneurial self-efficacy of opportunity-driven entrepreneurs, whereas task-specific training was better suited for increasing the entrepreneurial self-efficacy of necessity-driven entrepreneurs. Conclusion: The implications and recommendations of this study are that policymakers should design general entrepreneurial training programmes targeted at opportunity-driven entrepreneurs and task-specific training programmes targeted at necessity-driven entrepreneurs. Contribution: This study enhances the understanding of the training needs of necessity-driven entrepreneurs and how they differ from opportunity-driven entrepreneurs concerning ESE and the growth of their businesses.Item Mobile Technology use in clinical research examining challenges and implivations for health promotion in South Africa: mixed methods study(JMIR Publications, 2024) Norris, Shane A.; Mabetha, Khuthala; Soepnel, Larske M.; Mabena, Gugulethu; Motlhathedi, Molebogeng; Nyathi, Lukhanyo; Draper, Catherine E.Background: The use of mobile technologies in fostering health promotion and healthy behaviors is becoming an increasingly common phenomenon in global health programs. Although mobile technologies have been effective in health promotion initiatives and follow-up research in higher-income countries and concerns have been raised within clinical practice and research in low- and middle-income settings, there is a lack of literature that has qualitatively explored the challenges that participants experience in terms of being contactable through mobile technologies. Objective: This study aims to explore the challenges that participants experience in terms of being contactable through mobile technologies in a trial conducted in Soweto, South Africa. Methods: A convergent parallel mixed methods research design was used. In the quantitative phase, 363 young women in the age cohorts 18 to 28 years were contacted telephonically between August 2019 and January 2022 to have a session delivered to them or to be booked for a session. Call attempts initiated by the study team were restricted to only 1 call attempt, and participants who were reached at the first call attempt were classified as contactable (189/363, 52.1%), whereas those whom the study team failed to contact were classified as hard to reach (174/363, 47.9%). Two outcomes of interest in the quantitative phase were "contactability of the participants" and "participants' mobile number changes," and these outcomes were analyzed at a univariate and bivariate level using descriptive statistics and a 2-way contingency table. In the qualitative phase, a subsample of young women (20 who were part of the trial for ≥12 months) participated in in-depth interviews and were recruited using a convenience sampling method. A reflexive thematic analysis approach was used to analyze the data using MAXQDA software (version 20; VERBI GmbH). Results: Of the 363 trial participants, 174 (47.9%) were hard to reach telephonically, whereas approximately 189 (52.1%) were easy to reach telephonically. Most participants (133/243, 54.7%) who were contactable did not change their mobile number. The highest percentage of mobile number changes was observed among participants who were hard to reach, with three-quarters of the participants (12/16, 75%) being reported to have changed their mobile number ≥2 times. Eight themes were generated following the analysis of the transcripts, which provided an in-depth account of the reasons why some participants were hard to reach. These included mobile technical issues, coverage issues, lack of ownership of personal cell phones, and unregistered number. Conclusions: Remote data collection remains an important tool in public health research. It could, thus, serve as a hugely beneficial mechanism in connecting with participants while actively leveraging the established relationships with participants or community-based organizations to deliver health promotion and practice.
