Item Route tourism and local economic development in South Africa: the Magalies Meander and the Crocodile Ramble(2009-04-02T08:54:04Z) Stoddart, H.I.Abstract As is the case in many developed countries, tourism has come to be seen as an important driver for local economic development in South Africa as it provides opportunities for pro-poor and community-based initiatives. This study examines the theme of route tourism and local economic development. Two examples of route tourism, the Magalies Meander and Crocodile Ramble, in the Gauteng and the Northwest Provinces of South Africa, have been surveyed in order to assess what impact private sector route tourism initiatives have on local economic development in the Magaliesberg area. The results are compared with those of other similar route tourism initiatives in South Africa.Item Renewal of Small Town Economies: The Case of Alice, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa(2007-02-14T13:42:58Z) Xuza, Phila Hlonitshwa LorraineThis research investigates the role of small towns in local development, using the example of Alice in South Africa. Emphasis is placed upon the relationship between a small town and its rural hinterland with specific reference to agricultural and nonagricultural activities. The perceived conditions and the role of the town itself as observed by both rural and urban residents are highlighted by survey findings. The surveys involved eighty interviews with urban dwellers, eighty with rural dwellers and thirsty with local businesses. It is shown that there are unfulfilled community needs in terms of local business development and municipal efforts aimed at ensuring that the small town offers the economic services required to grow community incomes and the local economy.Item The expanded public works programme as a tool for local economic development: policies, processes, mechanisms and institutional arrangements(2006-11-14T11:52:30Z) Mogane, Maurice CharlesThe re-admittance of South Africa into the community of nations brought opportunities and challenges. South Africa had to adapt and conform to the prevailing global economic architecture and adhere to neo-liberal principles prevailing at the time while at home it had to face a restructuring economy and worsening social conditions for a majority of its people: unemployment, housing and infrastructure backlogs. Policies and programmes where devised and adopted. The EPWP and local economic development programmes are just two of the many programmes meant to deal with unemployment, skills development, inequality and poverty. This report investigates the potential of the EPWP as a tool for local economic development by reviewing the theoretical underpinnings of public works and local economic development; and the intergovernmental relations and planning policies, processes, mechanisms, and institutional arrangements in place to enable the programmes’ implementation. Based on the investigation, findings and recommendations are made.
